Our History
For decades, the Calcutta Chamber of Trade (CCT) has stood as a strong and trusted voice of the trading community of West Bengal. Our journey is one of courage in adversity, unity in action, and commitment to the growth and welfare of business.
The 1980s were a challenging period for traders, marked by labour unrest, militant trade unionism and an atmosphere of uncertainty. The tragic murder of Turab Bhai on 10 July 1984 became a defining moment for the trading community. CCT pursued the matter with determination and perseverance, ultimately contributing to a landmark outcome in which eleven accused were convicted. This strengthened the confidence of traders and demonstrated the importance of standing together for justice and the rule of law.
This spirit of solidarity encouraged increasing numbers of traders to join CCT — not merely for business representation, but for collective strength, security, guidance and support.
As the business environment evolved, so did CCT. Changing tax laws and increasingly complex compliance requirements created new challenges, particularly for small and medium businesses. When computers began transforming business practices, CCT chose handholding over resistance, helping traditional businesses understand and adopt technology through awareness programmes, seminars and practical guidance.
The introduction of VAT and the period of frequent tax raids brought another wave of uncertainty. CCT stood beside its members with moral support, legal guidance and awareness of their rights, helping traders navigate a rapidly changing regulatory environment with greater confidence.
Recognising that the trading community needed a stronger collective voice, CCT pioneered the idea of an apex body bringing trade associations across West Bengal together. This vision led to the formation of the Confederation of West Bengal Trade Associations (CWBTA), strengthening coordinated representation before the State and Central Governments.
CCT subsequently played a prominent role in addressing issues such as the Way Bill system, Trade Licence and Municipal Corporation licence renewal difficulties, administrative hurdles and corruption. When dialogue alone proved insufficient, the Chamber supported democratic and peaceful movements to seek reform.
The era of Trade Bandhs demonstrated the extraordinary unity of Bengal's trading community. Markets across the State responded to CCT's calls with remarkable solidarity, bringing commercial activity to a standstill in support of legitimate demands. The scale of these movements attracted national attention and even international recognition, including an interview with BBC London following a successful statewide Trade Bandh in the 1990s.
Yet CCT's legacy extends beyond agitations and advocacy. It is a legacy of service, education, legal awareness, constructive engagement and helping businesses adapt to change. Over the years, the Chamber has worked to ensure that traders are not left alone when confronted by uncertainty, regulatory change or adversity.
